What You Believe to be True

I work on Saturdays and my therapy office is housed within a larger office building. I was told, when I signed my lease, that the outside doors would be closed on Saturday and Sunday and that I would need to open the doors for any clients coming in on those days. No problem, I said.

Fast forward a few weekends where I dutifully stood at the door to let my clients into the building. While I was standing there, just inside the front lobby, a man walked up the steps, opened the door and entered...without using a key! I later asked the building manager about it and she told me that door was indeed open on Saturday, during the day. Perhaps I had misunderstood what she had first said.

Immediately I was reminded that there are many instances and experiences in life where someone tells us something is true and we believe it without question - sometimes these things may even be harmful, for example: "you're stupid" or "you will never amount to anything" or "you can't do anything right". They can also sound like shaming messages like: "You should..." or "You need to..." When we swallow what others tell us, we believe their truth without wondering first, if they might be wrong, we unknowingly harm ourselves.

The building door isn't locked on Saturdays and now I have the opportunity to examine other areas in my life that might be like the belief I had in that locked door - how about you? Are there doors in your life that might be open that you think are locked?
